The magnificent Mariana Nicolesco receives an award within the Sibiu ECC 2007 Program

The famous Romanian soprano Mariana Nicolesco will be awarded a prize in Sibiu, within a master class concert which will take place on Wednesday, November 28th, at the Thalia Hall starting with 7 p.m. The President of the European Cultural Forum, Dieter Topp, will hand in the prestigious award entitled the Special Award of the Cultural Press in Europe, Kultur Preis Europa, to Mariana Nicolesco “for her achievements and for the exceptional and successful role which she has in the relationship between Romania and Europe and between Europe and Romania”. Kultur Preis Europa, awarded annually, is handed in to first class personalities, among the award winners being the former German President Johannes Rau.

The concert in Sibiu is a musical event of high standards, taking place in Romania for the first time. The event presents Mariana Nicolesco, named UNESCO artist for Peace two years ago, together with the laureates of the Hariclea Darclée International Canto Contest: sopranos Aurelia Florian, Georgeta Grigore and Daniela Păcurar, mezzo-soprano Carmen Topciu, tenors Bogdan Mihai and Liviu Iftene, counter tenor Florin Ouatu and bass Daniel Mateian. The Romanian artists are accompanied by their foreign laureate colleagues: baritone Valeriu Caradja from Basarabia, Chinese soprano Baoyi Bi and Mexican tenor Cesar Sanchez. They will be accompanied by the great musician Marco Balderi playing the piano.

It is a truly special concert not just because of the exceptional quality of the artist, but also because it is meant to celebrate the birthday of beloved soprano Mariana Nicolesco, who states: ‘’I celebrated my birthday in memorable performances on the stage of the Scala di Milano Theatre, of the Municipal Theatre in Rio de Janeiro, on the stage of the Lyric Opera in Chicago or that of Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. But this celebration, in the heart of Romania, together with so many new remarkable talents and with such a European recognition, represents to me an incomparable joy.’’

The tickets for this concert are available at the Ticketing Agency on Nicolae Balcescu Street at no. 17 at a price of 15 lei, and respectively 10 lei after applying a discount based on a valid ID card.

An event organized by the Ateneul Roman International Foundation for the Sibiu European Capital of Culture 2007 Program.
